The key difference between social media and traditional media lies in its name: social. Where traditional media is essentially one-way, static communication experienced in print, television and radio, social media is two-way and can be experienced anywhere, due to the rise of mobile devices.
Additionally, traditional media provides no real vehicle for dialogue. However, the social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Periscope, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Pinterest, blogs and more all provide PR professionals with the opportunity to speak directly with target publics--without interference from a media gatekeeper. Visitor interaction is encouraged and the features to do so are built right into the platforms. Target publics are expected to be involved through likes, comments, pins and shares of content they identify with and enjoy.
Finally, anytime during a social media campaign, data analytics offers an immediate review to results. The real time nature of social media and these measurements allow in-campaign adjustments to messages, targeting and tactics, which is unheard of in traditional media. Social media is anything but static. It’s an ever-changing, 24/7, real time exchange of ideas, imagery, sentiments and opinions, where anyone can have a voice at any time, on any topic they choose.
