What changes did Brown v. Board of Education bring into the school system?
What will be an ideal response?
The Brown case officially desegregated the schools, but it also brought the federal court system into the schools to a degree never before known. Because of continual resistance to desegregation, the federal courts were required to take on the role of overseers of some school districts, imposing mandates on hiring of teachers and administrators, enrollment systems, district boundaries, busing, and school board elections. The 9-0 vote of the Supreme Court in Brown signaled to the nation that the time had come for society to change for the civil rights of all people to be recognized and protected, and for the schools to provide an education for all children. That decision also indicated that the courts would be used to enforce mandated changes when society refused to make the changes voluntarily.
