What is gender schema theory?
What will be an ideal response?
A schema is an organized set of mental associations used to interpret what one sees. Gender schema examines people in terms of how likely they are to view a situation in terms of gender issues. Bem observed that children learn to apply gender schemas fairly early. For instance, girls wear nail polish and boys do not. Boy are not supposed to cry, whereas girls can and do cry. Adults who are gender focused tend to see behaviors as unmanly or unfeminine. Gender schema is a very strong schema. Bem proposes that parents teach their children an individual difference approach. If one child calls another a sissy because he likes ballet, the mother might point out that both males and females engage in ballet. Clients need to become aware of their own gender schema, especially as such schema relates to how they view themselves. What factors enter into how a person might view himself or herself as a man or as a woman?
