RSV is a viral infection that is common in children younger than 3 years. In general, it occurs during
the winter and spring months. Palivizumab (Synagis) is currently the only product available for
RSV prevention. Palivizumab prophylaxis, a monthly intramuscular injection, is available to a select
subset of infants according to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines but is not used with
the general pediatric population. Breastfeeding may have a protective effect. RSV is contracted
through direct contact with respiratory secretions; therefore preventive hygiene, such as good
handwashing, is important. Maintaining current immunizations is important to avoid additional
preventable infections.
