What is intrinsic and extrinsic motivation? Why should a leader have a good understanding of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation when managing people?

What will be an ideal response?

A good answer will define and describe both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. It will show that intrinsic motivation is mainly about meeting self-actualization and belongingness needs, and that extrinsic motivation is about meeting esteem and other basic needs. The very good answer will raise Deci and Ryan’s argument that intrinsic motivation is critical and provide an explanation as to why (i.e. to foster self-fulfillment and self-actualization). A superior answer will also highlight that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are not mutually exclusive concepts.
