Describe the treatment for gout.

What will be an ideal response?

Initial treatment of gout involves the use of NSAIDs to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Glucocorticoids and colchicine are also used to reduce inflammation. Once the pain and inflammation of the acute attack are controlled, the hyperuricemia is treated using the drug allopurinol or one of several other drugs that increase urinary excretion of uric acid. As medications have become the mainstay of treatment for gout, dietary interventions and lifestyle modifications may not be consistently recommended. It may still be helpful in managing gout to include recommendations for moderate alcohol consumption, avoiding purine-rich foods, and achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight. Crash dieting resulting in overly rapid weight loss will reduce urinary excretion of uric acid and thus possibly precipitate an attack of gout. Dietary patterns consistent with the DASH diet demonstrated a reduced risk of gout.
