Over the centuries, jurisdictions using capital punishment have searched for more humane execution methods. Note the form those attempts have taken and comment on whether or not it is important to use the most humane method
What will be an ideal response?
The four most common methods of execution during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have been hanging, electrocution, the gas chamber, and lethal injection. Electrocution, the gas chamber, and lethal injection were all introduced as a more humane method but each eventually came to be criticized for having less than humane consequences. Answers to the question about how important it is to have a humane method of execution will vary, but could comment on such topics as deterrence (e.g., a belief that more horrific methods may be more likely to deter) or retribution (e.g., lextalionis requires punishment in equal measure to the crime). Those favoring humane methods may note the importance of respect for human life (even a murderer's) and that society should avoid lowering itself to the murderer's level.
