What was the climate that prompted the establishment of tenure laws? Are tenure laws appropriate for today's' learning environments?

What will be an ideal response?

Tenure was created because of the belief that an open exchange of information and free discussion of ideas are at the heart of our free society, but teachers are in a precarious position if they help students learn to think critically about unpopular ideas or issues, thus jeopardizing their jobs. Some opponents of tenure argue that the system guarantees lifetime employment for incompetent teachers. This claim is not true, but it may take years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to dismiss a tenured teacher, because of the challenging process involved. The student may put forth creative suggestions for minimizing this process.
