Explain in detail about the Race to the Top initiative
What will be an ideal response?
The Race to the Top initiative is a federal funding program that creates a statewide competition for education grants. This funding has been awarded to states that have submitted credible proposals with plans for implementing educational reforms that have the promise to help the lowest performing schools as well as provide blueprints for measuring teacher effectiveness and student learning. It is a competition designed to provide states with extra funding for education if they can demonstrate a realistic, well-crafted plan to address criteria that include:
I. Improving teacher and principal effectiveness through creative preparation, mentoring, and support programs.
II. Creating a meaningful state education reform agenda and building capacity to scale up the implementation of programs designed to meet this agenda.
III. Adopting the Common Core Standards, improving upon them and developing high-quality assessments.
IV. Turning around the lowest achieving schools with an implementable plan.
V. Ensuring high performing charter schools and other innovative schools are successful.
