Stage 1:Labor—This tends to be the longest stage of birth, with the effacement (thinning) and dilation (widening) of the cervix, the opening to the uterus. The mother typically feels uterine contractions occurring more frequently and more regularly throughout this stage. At the end of this stage, transition, the cervix goes from 6-10 cm dilation and then crowning, when the fetus reaches the vaginal opening. Stage 2: Birth—During the second stage of birth, the baby is delivered. Stage 3: Placental (afterbirth)—The third stage occurs when the placenta is expelled from the uterus.
