Identify and discuss the major stages of medical treatment for children and youth with TBI

What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER: Medical treatment occurs in overlapping phases. During the first phase, medical
personnel focus on maintaining the individual's life and treating the swelling and bleeding
thereby reducing complications and reducing the level of coma.
The second stage of treatment focuses on relearning and mastering the preinjury
behaviors. These may include walking, eating, speaking, and so forth. This stage of the
treatment may take considerable time and effort. During this phase children or youth are
being prepared to return to their homes.
The last stage of treatment focuses on helping the affected individual deal with the
residual effects of the injury. This stage often involves referring the individual and family
to community agencies and specific education programs who service individuals with
brain injuries.
