A conformist is in line with the stereotypical view of followers as being highly agreeable or always agreeing with the leader—never or rarely challenging the leader. A conformist can be highly engaged or disengaged, and is likely to be highly loyal to the leader. In the long-run, conformity can result in problems not being solved, innovative ideas not being pursued, and changes not occurring. An alienated follower is usually a critical and independent thinker and could be a problem-solver or innovator. This individual is not engaged and, as a result, might not offer ideas and solutions. This individual may have provided ideas in the past in a pushy or disloyal way, or even by publicly criticizing the leader, causing him/her to be pushed to the out-group and becoming alienated over time. This lack of contribution or obstruction is obviously not effective behavior.
