Pre-viewing a chapter helps you understand the material because you discover the writer's outline before you read it in detail. To pre-view a chapter, start with the title, which tells you what the chapter is about. Then, look at the headings and subheadings, which give you more specific areas that are covered in the chapter. Looking at how long the chapter is will help you budget your time. The introduction and summary paragraphs indicate where the material is going and what conclusions the author is making. The topic sentences are probably the most valuable, as they give you the main ideas of each paragraph, or one important detail the author wanted to share. In addition, other things to look at include boldface and italicized words, margin notes and footnotes, illustrations and captions, and end-of-the-chapter questions.
