Why is it difficult for policymakers to set policy based on the value of the unemployment rate relative to the natural rate of unemployment?
What will be an ideal response?
The value of the natural rate of unemployment is difficult to estimate in real time. Many years after the fact, we have a better estimate of the natural rate, but in real time, the estimate is very imprecise and may be off by 1/2 of a percentage point or more. So, policymakers need to look at variables other than the unemployment rate relative to the perceived natural rate of unemployment.
