Compare and contrast the NFPA with the NALA.
What will be an ideal response?
The National Federation of Paralegal Associations and the National Association of Legal
Assistants are both national paralegal/legal assistant organizations with thousands of
members in affiliated organizations across the country. Both groups have their own sets of
ethics rules that apply to the membership, and both groups have methods in place for
disciplining their members who violate the ethics rules. Both groups have their own websites
and magazines. Both groups have their own certification exams: the NFPA offering the
PACE; the NALA offering the CLA exam. Both certification programs require that
applicants have combinations of work experience and a college degree. One of the significant
differences between the two organizations is that the NFPA is in favor of paralegal licensure,
whereas the NALA is opposed to it. Another difference is that each group uses a different
term: paralegal versus legal assistant.
