ANSWER: Since the superintendent does not have tenure, she may lose her position at any time that she loses the confidence of the school board. In addition to having the knowledge, experience, and expertise required for running a district's schools, the superintendent must have finely polished interpersonal skills. Much of her time will be spent either in conflict resolution between groups who have competing claims, or in diplomatically trying to answer demands that may be very difficult or impossible. She must also possess strong leadership to direct the schools forward, without getting mired in the politics that frequently engulf school systems. These stresses and strains often cause burnout or frequent turnover in the superintendent's position.
