Describe the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale. Why was a performance scale added to the test?
What will be an ideal response?
The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and Wechsler Intelligence Scale
for Children (WISC) have items that are organized into various subtests. Scores from
the various subtests are combined to give a single IQ score.
The Verbal Scale emphasizes language and verbal skills. Because of this emphasis, a person from a deprived environment or for whom English is a second language might have difficulty on this scale because of lack of verbal knowledge rather than lack of cognitive ability.
In an attempt to measure nonverbal skills and rule out other cultural or educational problems, Wechsler added the Performance Scale. These performance subtests, which measure problem-solving abilities, require concentration and focused effort, which may be difficult for people who are very nervous or are poor test takers.
