What are some of the challenges grandparents face in raising grandchildren? Describe interventions to support grandparents raising grandchildren.
What will be an ideal response?
Grandparents raising grandchildren face multiple challenges. They have possibly assumed the role of parenting their grandchildren as the result of crisis. The biological parent may be mentally ill, abusing drugs, incarcerated or deceased. Some grandparents assume the role during military deployment and worry about the safety of their own child. Often grandparents have depleted finances, declining health, suffer from depression, and have few resources to help them provide the necessities of clothing, food and adequate housing for the child(ren). Former parenting skills may prove ineffective with the issues of the day. Grandparents may feel socially isolated and feel they have somehow failed in their own parenting responsibilities. Depending on the legal status of the relationship to the child (custodial, foster, adoption, etc.) the grandparent may face obstacles with the school, medical and legal systems.
