Can special diets reduce the symptoms of ASD? Explain your answers.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Students should first identify the lack of no convincing evidence that special diets reduce the symptoms of ASD. Research proposes that children with ASD might not have gastrointestinal (GI) problems, but instead have behaviors that create GI symptoms. When a child insists on eating only certain foods, he/she might not get enough fiber or fluids, which leads to constipation. Therefore, limiting certain foods may have reduced the symptoms of gastrointestinal problems, not the symptoms of ASD.
