The sound stimulus has three characteristics: amplitude, wavelength, and purity. Wavelength affects the perception of pitch; amplitude affects the perception of loudness; and purity influences the perception of the timbre, or complexity, of a sound.
People are sensitive to variations in the purity of sounds. The purest sound is one that has only a single frequency of vibration. The same note played on two different instruments would have the same wavelength (or frequency), but the timbre, or purity, of the sound would be different; thus the sound would be perceived differently.
