When your grandma was a young girl, she lived in a house on the bank of a river. When she returns to the house after 60 years, she is surprised to see that the river has moved several feet away from the bank. Explain how the river shifted its position.

What will be an ideal response?

The home was probably built on the inside of a meander in the river. The water on the inside of a meander moves more slowly than the water on the outside. For this reason, larger sediments and more sediment are deposited by the stream on the inside of the curve. On the outside of the curve, the faster water erodes the bank. So over time, the river shifts away from the inside curve.
