Frances Redi disproved spontaneous generation by designing a controlled experiment where he placed raw meat in six (6) jars. He covered three jars with a fine net and left three jars open. After a short period, maggots appeared in the open jars while the covered jars had no maggots. In your opinion, what additional controls and measurements could Frances Redi have done to prove that rotting of raw meat is caused by live bacteria?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer:
- In this experiment the control should be covered with cotton plug in order to prevent entry of any of the small larva etc.
- Or organisms other than bacteria. This will prove actual effect of bacteria in the degradation of meat.
- One negative control should also be there that will contain meat that is sterilized and placed in aseptic condition.
- So, that no bacterial activity can affect meat. In this way we will be able to get the true bacterial activity on meat placed in jar with cotton plug.

Active transport in plant root cells requires that those cells have access to O2. Normally there is enough O2 available
in air pockets in the soil, but flooded soil has very little O2. Thus, unless they have special adaptations, plants in flooded soil effectively have no active transport in their roots. Which of the following should you expect to occur for trees without special adaptations to flooding after several days in flooded soil?
a. excess uptake of water and minerals in the xylem only b. wilting of their leaves c. bursting of leaf cells due to excess water flow d. excess water pushed out at the margins of their leaves only e. excess uptake of water and minerals in the xylem, and excess water pushed out at the margins of their leaves
