What could Pfizer do in the future to improve its prospects for Lipitor?

What will be an ideal response?

One of the main challenges facing the long-term growth of Lipitor is the concern about statins long-term effects. If Pfizer could commission a study showing that long-term statin use does not cause significant negative effects, then they would be growing the entire market for cholesterol-lowering drugs and in turn, the sales of Lipitor. Even as things stand, there are huge numbers of baby boomers aging, and the market stands to grow from $18.8 billion in 2002 to $23.6 billion in 2007. There is also the possibility that statins might prove effective against Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis. Also, 52 million people in America need medical attention for high cholesterol but only one third of this population is receiving it- tapping into new patient streams would significantly enhance Lipitor's market share, given that Pfizer is a powerhouse marketer and the drug is under patent protection until 2009. The other factor that could help Pfizer would be to develop a strategy to counter the new releases like Crestor from competitors like AstraZeneca and have their strategies in place in the market before the release of their competitors’ drugs. Currently, Pfizer has no plans to change its marketing track. Perhaps their need to rethink their strategy because this was what undid Merck’s dominance.
