Compared to just a century ago, a much larger percentage of the population is living to be 80-90 years old. Why does cancer seem to be a much larger problem today than a century ago?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers may vary. There is currently much research on this topic. One factor that may contribute to the increase in cancer is the increased exposure to environmental mutagens in today's world. Carcinogenic substances have been found in agricultural chemicals, fried hamburgers and French fries, food additives, tobacco smoke, etc. Another contributory factor could be that the longer one lives, the greater the number of mutations that accumulate in one's genome. Cancer is usually the result of a series of mutations, so more mutations mean a greater risk for cancer. A diet that contains less fruits and vegetables could also contribute to the increased colon cancer rate.
