Compare and contrast Sigmund Freud's and Erik Erikson's theories of personality development

What will be an ideal response?

* Freud was the first to propose that the first few years are critical to personality development.
* Freud was concerned with the manner in which children resolved conflicts between their biological urges and the demands of society (parents), and that at particular ages the child passed through certain stages.
* Erikson believed our personality was formed by how we reacted to a series of psychosocial crises that occur as we grow older; a psychosocial crisis occurs when a psychological need conflicts with societal pressures and demands.
* These theories are similar in that they are both stage theories focused on how an individual's personality is shaped by overcoming or reacting to certain "obstacles" at critical points in childhood.
* Differences exist in that Freud focused on biological urges whereas Erikson focused on psychosocial crises.
