What is the operating ratio, how is computed and what does it measure?

The operating ratio is a measurement of operating efficiency. It is computed by dividing the expenses by the revenue and developing a percentage ratio. The operating ration measures how well a carrier is being managed and how much out of every dollar of income is paid out in expenses. In other words, the operating ratio measures how much a carrier must spend to earn a dollar in revenue.
