Researchers employ a number of techniques to investigate the perceptual capabilities of
neonates and infants. Present two of these research methods. What type of information do they
provide?
What will be an ideal response?
Types:
1. Preference technique – present two stimuli at sametime; measure how long (latency) infant attends
to each. Indicates infants can distinguish differences; information concerning inclinations.
2. Habituation/dishabituation – present stimulus orobject until infant loses interest. Present another
stimulus which is slightly dissimilar from the original; provides information on ability to distinguish
between stimuli.
3. Operant conditioning - train infant to perform a behavior in response to a particular stimulus; then
provide a contingent reinforcement; modify stimulus; does infant respond as they did to original
stimulus; provides information on ability to differentiate.
