Describe the climate and weather-related events of 2017. What were the long- and short-term impacts? What does 2017 indicate about climate change? In your discussion, provide at least two examples of weather events from 2017, as outlined in the text, to illustrate your points or bolster your argument.
What will be an ideal response?
Students should summarize at minimum two of the events outlined in the text, which include specific examples of hurricanes (Harvey, Irma, Jose, Maria, Ophelia), record temperatures, wildfires (California), massive earthquakes (Mexico), and monsoons (India, Nepal, Bangladesh). Students should discuss how climate/weather events kill and maim, displace people, burden infrastructure, etc. Developing countries experience the most acute affects, but no region is spared. Students may discuss health, economic, physical and/or social impacts. They should also identify the lasting effects of these disasters and may discuss how many communities never fully recover or become permanently displaced or dependent. General conclusions should include that extreme weather events are increasing, are unpredictable, and devastating across the globe.
