Describe the processes that occur in the small intestine

What will be an ideal response?

Both mechanical digestion and chemical digestion occur in the small intestine. Mechanical digestion results from peristalsis, segmentation, and pendular movement. Bicarbonate secreted into the duodenum from the pancreas neutralizes the acidity of the chyme. All macronutrients are further broken down into their component parts by specific enzymes. Vitamins and minerals are absorbed intact. Absorption of digested nutrients is enhanced by the multitude of villi and microvilli that increase the surface area of the small intestine. Food remains in the small intestine for 3 to 6 hours, depending on the amount of food and type of food consumed.
