You are with a group of friends when you overhear another group speaking Spanish. One of your friends says in a somewhat loud voice, “if they’re going to be in this country, they should only speak English. I wonder if they’re even legal.”
What do you do?
A- If I was in this particular situation, I would be very disappointed in my friend. As far as I know, I do not have friends whom would act in this way, but if it were to happen, I would be very angry with them. I have watched videos of people being very mean to people speaking other languages that are not English. I feel that no matter where you are in the world, you should not treat someone badly based on where they are from. Especially not in the United States. The diversity in the U.S. is what makes our country a great place to live and work. Our country is not made up of just on culture, we are made up of many different co-cultures which are smaller groups of people who hold common values, beliefs, attitudes, and customs that differ from dominant cultures. I have learned a lot in this module about vulture and how it affects our communication. After reading chapter I can see these things in my life that I had never thought about before. Our ideas, values, and beliefs are what make up our culture. Those same ideas, beliefs, and values affect whom we will associate ourselves with and how we speak to other people. According to the textbook, some cultures are individualistic which value personal rights, privacy, and voicing one’s opinion. There are also cultures that are collectivist which means they value community, collaboration, harmony, and public good. Those are two very different types of people and how they communicate would be very different.
