The manager of a local retail store tells you that, "An unprofitable segment should always close." Do you agree or disagree with this statement and why?
One would disagree with this statement. Many times an unprofitable segment is kept open for qualitative reasons. For example, it may be kept open as a service to customers. In addition, unprofitable segments may draw customers to other more profitable segments of the company. Thus, even if an individual segment is operating at a loss, it can help increase overall company profits to leave it open.
