Exemplary school programs
The No Child Left Behind Act is the federal government's attempt to provide high quality education for all children, regardless of the conditions which influence their lives. Schools are encouraged and expected to become exemplary education centers. This chapter addresses three aspects of excellence and identifies questions in each category. Discuss the three aspects of determining the extent to which a school is exemplary. What will you need to know and do to prepare to assume a major role in each of the three aspects? Which challenges will be greatest for you? Explain why and indicate how you can address them in a highly satisfactory way.
What will be an ideal response?
ANS: Scoring guide:
Key elements that should appear in an appropriate response:
* To answer the first part of the assignment, the student must provide an organized and thorough explanation of the need, nature, and implementation of an exemplary education program. Points are deducted for incomplete information.
* The second part of the assignment involves self-evaluation and reflection involving the questions addressed in the three categories. Emphasis on a thorough and specific recognition of both what the student must know and do is required for full credit.
* The third part of the assignment requires the student to self-evaluate and to problem solve in terms of acquiring further expertise. A well-considered response includes at least two challenges with an explanation of the reasons for designating them and specific ways of responding to the challenges by reading (this text as well as others), discussing (both in and out of class), and considering education experiences, followed by reflection.
