Describe one area of research that has shown promise in reducing some of the physiological effects of aging
What will be an ideal response?
Answer:
- Growth hormone treatments: Growth hormone treatments increase muscle mass, bone density and activity levels. However, the effects do not last.
- DHEA: DHEA is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. After mice were injected with DHEA, they showed increased activity level, but there were no beneficial effects with humans.
- Calorie restriction: Decreasing calorie intake has been associated with more muscle mass, less fat and greater activity levels in a number of animals. With humans, a long-term reduction of calories was correlated with lower blood pressure and better cardiovascular health.
