The costs of conflict are severe and profound. Conflict impacts all areas of social life and has social, political, and economic consequences including in public health, mental health, educational attainment, child physical and intellectual development, and investment capital. In each of these measures, life chances are diminished during and for, in many cases, decades after conflict. This in turn may increase the likelihood of further conflict. Violent conflicts and their consequences often spill over into neighboring countries and destabilizing entire regions. Many examples are discussed in the text—examples include refugee crises, reduced educational attainment, lower GDPs, gender inequality, etc.
