Describe an example to illustrate the disastrous effects of large scale freshwater transfer projects in dry areas.

What will be an ideal response?

The Aral sea water transfer project clearly illustrates the disastrous effects of large scale water transfers. Diverting massive amounts of freshwater inputs for irrigation resulted in 90% loss of water volume in the Aral Sea, increased salinity in sea water and disruption of ecosystems. The effects were exacerbated by high evaporation rates and drought in the area.
