A therapist might refer clients to nonfiction books, autobiographies, self-help books, and movies. For instance, a therapist might give a reading assignment for a woman who is very concerned about being overweight. She might recommend reading some medical summaries involving obesity as well as autobiographies of women who successfully dealt with their weight issues. In addition, therapists give clients reading assignments that address such issues as coping skills, gender role stereotypes, power differentials between men and women, gender inequality, and society’s obsession with thinness. Reading assignments may serve to bridge cultural gaps between the client and therapist.
