Some common problems that may be experienced by student with special needs in social studies include: (i) difficulties in reading—and particularly, comprehension—comprehension that often prove difficult for students with learning disabilities include recall of facts, summarizing key points in main ideas, locating details that are supportive of the main ideas of text material, following the sequence of events, and making inferences from available text data; (ii) difficulties with written expression, strength of vocabulary to understand and retain, note-taking difficulties in lecture-based classes, and conceptually being able to find the big ideas in the social studies curriculum within the myriad of factual details.
