Energy-dense foods are high in calories because their high sugar and fat contents. Consumption of these empty calories increases the likelihood of overweight and obesity. However, nutrient-dense foods are rich in nutrients and low in calories. They are whole unprocessed foods with little fat or sugar. Nutrient-dense foods are essential for persons who need to lose weight. While an apple is a nutrient-dense food, apple pie is a calorie-dense food.
