This type of diabetes is carbohydrate intolerance resulting from destruction of insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Individuals with type 1 diabetes require an external supply of insulin. Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disease. Type 2 diabetes is a disease characterized by high blood glucose levels due to the body's inability to use insulin normally, or to produce enough insulin.
