The number-family strategy is based on the concept that three numbers can be used to form four math statements. For example, the numbers 2, 5, and 7 yield 2 + 5 = 7, 5 + 2 = 7, 7 – 5 = 2, and 7 – 2 = 5. The numbers may be represented at the following number-family diagram:
When using the number-family strategy to solve basic facts, students are taught that the big number (total) goes at the end of the arrow. If the big number is not known, a box goes at the end of the number-family arrow. In a typical problem, two of the numbers in the family are provided. Students place these numerals where they belong in the family and then determine whether the missing numeral is obtained by adding or subtracting.
