During the 7 months of fetal development, each organ grows to maturity according to its own characteristic schedule, with greater intensity at some times than at others. Intense development and rapid cell division take place only during certain times. During times of critical periods each organ and tissue is most vulnerable to an insult such as a nutrient deficiency. If nutrients are not available during these times, significant damage can take place with regard to organ development.
