Compare and contrast transference and countertransference.

What will be an ideal response?

?When material that is directly evident in our relationship with a client is used to highlight issues that exist in the client’s outside life, it is a powerful vehicle for learning.
Transference often plays a central role in this learning.
?The transference phenomenon has to do with the ways in which our clients bring old unfinished business, usually involving significant figures in their past, particularly parents, into the current relationship with us.
?The client has transferred his feelings about his parents and other adults and his reactions to what they do to this situation with the counselor.
?By refusing to go along with the client’s transference, the counselor provides an opportunity for the client to deal with her in a new, more adult fashion.
?The counselor has her own unique reactions to her client as well, some of which are based on the reality of who he is and some based on her own unfinished business.
?The counselor’s unfinished business is the stuff of countertransference, the mirror image of the client’s transference.
