Gender is associated with norms, roles, and behaviors that shift over time and are socially constructed. A growing number of researchers also suggest that sex is socially constructed rather than solely biological. A minority of infants are born with ambiguous sex characteristics and/or an abnormal chromosomal makeup. There are also many people who identify outside of the gender binary.
