Briefly describe the legal controversy involving the service called "Aereo," including what Aereo was, how it worked, who objected to it, and why the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against Aereo in 2014.
What will be an ideal response?
Aereo was a subscription service that used small antennas that connect to the Internet to allow people to receive free, over-the-air broadcast television signals live on mobile digital devices like tablets and smartphones. The broadcast networks objected to the service because the networks are not paid a retransmission fee by Aereo, and thus the broadcasters' business models are disrupted. In June 2014, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the broadcasters in ABC, Inc. v. Aereo. In a 6-3 decision, the Court ruled that Aereo had violated copyright laws. The Court said Aereo was "not simply an equipment provider," but, instead, it was acting like a cable system in that it retransmitted copyrighted content.
