As identified by the U.S. Conference of Mayors-Sodexho Hunger and Homelessness Survey 2014, there are many causes of hunger and food insecurity that are often interrelated. The factor most frequently identified by the survey cities was unemployment, followed by poverty, low wages, and high housing and health care costs. Other factors may include utility costs, lack of education, transportation costs, mental health problems, and substance abuse.
