Explain purging in detail.

Before publishing a movie for distribution and general use, it is a good idea to purge the library of all unused items. Purging helps reduce the overall size of the Flash movie. To delete individual items from the library, you can select them in the Library panel and click the Delete button on the Library panel status bar. The benefit to this technique is that you can choose which items to delete selectively. For example, the library might contain some symbols that are not currently being used but that you want to save for possible future use if the movie ever has to be edited. The downside to this technique is that you may accidentally delete an item that is in use on the stage — deleting it from the library will remove it from the stage.

Flash offers a Select Unused Items command available on the Library panel’s menu. You can use this command to select all unused items, then click the Delete button to purge the library.
