First stage: Sensorimotor (from birth to 2 years old): Characteristics include constructing an understanding of the world by coordinating sensory experiences with physical actions. Infants progress from exhibiting reflexive and instinctive actions to the beginning of symbolic thought. Second stage: Preoperational (from 2 to 7 years old): Characteristics include beginning to represent the world with words and images, which are indicative of symbolic thinking. Third stage: Concrete operational (from 7 to 11 years old): Characteristics include thinking logically about concrete events and being able to classify objects into different sets. Fourth stage: Formal operational (from 11 to 15 years of age): Characteristics include reasoning in abstract, idealistic, and logical ways.
