What is NGT? What is its value for group decision-making?
What will be an ideal response?
Nominal group technique (NGT) helps a group reach decisions when some
members are too dominant. Each participant creates separate lists of the advantages
and disadvantages of each alternative solution being considered. After a set time, the
participants present their lists, which are posted for all to see and discuss. Then
members work alone again to rank all advantages and disadvantages of the alternatives.
Then a master list is compiled. The participants can then discuss the issue again.
Eventually, the group will generate a decision that reflects all participants’ views. The
most powerful and dominant members cannot affect the outcome disproportionately.
This process can also save time because the participants can generate their lists before
the meeting.
