What will be an ideal response?
- Dialectical theory looks at sets of opposing forces that pull us in two directions at the same time. There are three opposing forces that are each present in every relationship.
* Connectedness versus autonomy refers to the desire to connect with other people and at the same time to maintain our separateness and independence.
* Predictability versus novelty (or certainty versus uncertainty), refers to the idea that we like to know what to expect in a relationship but at the same time we get bored and are attracted to novelty and the unexpected. There must be a balance between comfortable routines and a need for things to be new and fresh in our relationships.
* Openness versus closedness refers to our desire to disclose information to others so they can know us better, but at the same time we value our privacy and feel a desire to hold back information.
