What are the three main goals of MI? Briefly describe each of them.
What will be an ideal response?
(1) Increase intrinsic motivation: motivation generated from within where clients make their own argument for change has a greater impact on behavior than motivation from the outside. Intrinsic motivation is related to a client’s sense of autonomy and this leads to better goal attainment.
(2) Lower resistance/discord: the goal is not to get rid of resistance since this might be impossible. Rather, lowering resistance is appropriate because a healthy level of resistance may be beneficial.
(3) Resolve ambivalence: ambivalence refers to feeling two ways about changing a habit or behavior. The polarity of these different feelings play a key role in why people stay stuck in problematic behaviors.
